A winch is a mechanical device that is used for the purposes of hoisting and hauling. Winches can either be hand-powered or motor-driven. Winches have a drum around which is wound a rope or a chain attached to the load being moved. Winches are used in tow trucks, steam shovels and elevators. Winches are also frequently used as elements of backstage mechanics to move scenery in large theatrical productions, to move large set pieces on and off. Winches have recently been fabricated specifically for water and snow sports, such as wakeskating, snowboarding and wakeboarding.
