A hoist is used to lift and lower a load through the use of a drum or lift-wheel with rope or chain wraps. Hoists can be operated by hand, electrically or pneumatically driven. Hoists may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium. Hoists have a lifting hook by which a load is attached to it. Hoists lift medium and power type. The lifting medium is either wire rope, wrapped around a drum, or load-chain, raised by a pulley. The power can be provided by different means. Common means are hydraulics, electrical and air driven motors. Hoists can be categorized into construction hoists, mine hoists and chain hoist among others.
