Gypsum is a soft mineral, a sulfate mineral, made up of calcium sulfate dehydrate and can be used as a fertilizer. Gypsum is one of the main components of plaster and is widely mined. As a mineral, it is alabaster, commonly used for sculpturing. Gypsum is used as a finish for walls and ceilings, in construction as drywall or plasterboard, for surgical splints, casting moulds, modeling, as fertilizer and soil conditioning, as a wood substitute in the ancient world and as a tofu coagulant, making it a major source of dietary calcium. Gypsum is also used in baking as a dough conditioner and is a common ingredient in making mead, in foot creams, shampoos and many other hair products and impression plasters in dentistry.
